THE HISTORY OF UPCO
Urban Poor Child Organisation is a Community Based Organisation (CBO) that works to support urban poor children to undergo training of their choice. The organisation is based at Gbegbeyise, which is one of the slum communities within the Accra Metropolis. Our targeted areas are deprived communities within urban areas.
The idea of establishing this organization came as a result of the desire and feelings of an ex-street boy who obtained several experiences during his time on the streets of Accra and proposed to make sure his fellow young men and women do not go through the same difficulties in life.
His studies revealed the alarming rate of the new phenomenom of school drop-outs that contribute to streetism. The need to give these vunerable children a chance to benefit from education in a wider sense of the world, with emphasis on technical and vocational training, brought UPCO into existence. The organization started earlier in early 1999-2000 and was officialy recognised in 2002 by Register General department of the Republic of Ghana and the department of Social welfare.
